The Petworth Festival welcomes a quintet from the region’s leading professional ensemble in tandem with their remarkable Music Director, pianist Joanna MacGregor. Led by violinist Ruth Rogers, their programme contrasts the baroque splendour of Purcell and Bach with the latter- day masters Arvo Pärt and Astor Piazzolla. The second half is given over to Vaughan Williams’ expressively romantic Piano Quintet, a work that carries his unmistakable signature.
Programme
Purcell/Britten Chacony in G minor
Bach Concerto in F minor
Arvo Pärt Fratres (soloist Ruth Rogers)
Piazzolla/MacGregor Three Tangos: Michelangelo 70, Milonga del Angel, Libertango
Vaughan Williams Piano Quintet in C minor
“If there’s one person who has introduced me to more stunning young performers than any other it is pianist Joanna MacGregor. She’s a wonderfully versatile pianist in her own right of course, but she’s second to none as a tutor, mentor and all round musician. And she’s also a great chamber musician of course, and it’s in this guise she joins us this summer with some fellow musicians from the Brighton Phil. And boy, does Joanna know how to put together an interesting programme. The Piazzolla alone will be worth the price of a ticket.” Stewart Collins
