The Festival returns to Petworth’s Catholic Church for the first time in several years for an elegant choral performance by the young and fast establishing female acapella ensemble Voice. Formed in 2006, Voice has established a reputation for performances of secular and non-secular music from the medieval music of Hildegard of Bingen to twenty-first- century commissions. Their programme – A Life of Love and Joy – is a sequence of songs that illustrate both joyful and celebratory settings of poetry often using the theme of birds as heraldic symbols and the recurring topic of unattainable love so often expounded in Medieval Europe. With music by Hildegard of Bingen, Guillaume de Machaut and other composers writing in the 14th and 15th centuries.
